| The properties of the software platform "Google Earth" form a good basis for adding virtual surface artistic contents that relate to certain places on our planet. With the help of the program many different levels can be displayed permitting the representation of certain facts on the ground (e.g. global traffic data, weather information or 3-D models of buildings). Beside numerous levels existing so far there is the possibility to establish a level for virtual art projects only. In addition to that it is already possible to view artistic contributions independent of the Google server via download on the Google Earth surface. Unlike „Second Life“, where the virtual environment develops completely isolated, there is a direct relation of "Google Earth" to the virtual world. This surface, which is directly related to the earth´s surface, serves as the only way for performance. There is always a connection to the real place, which the virtual environment refers to and tries to simulate. Thus, any displayed and manufactured artistic contents have a reference to a real place. It is new, though, to use "site specifity", a concept or term which has been applied mainly to describe art in public spaces, with regard to a virtual surface. Virtual objects, which refer to a physical environment unfold their special potential only by reference to reality. |
